Decade Fail

In a recent newspaper report on the state of the nation, local journalist Tom Moran cites a Pew survey in which most Americans surveyed rated the current and swiftly ending decade as the worst one of their lives. As a professional academic who was ousted from a highly rated, long-term teaching post this decade after a Fundamentalist takeover of the school where I taught, I am inclined to agree. Five years later I am still searching for any kind of meaningful full-time work, while yesterday I spied an ad for a “Ghost Twitterer” (as if someone is so important that they can’t write their own 140 daily words) and bowed my head in sorrow. Maybe we really have sunk to a new low.

What really caught my eye, however, was the statement of a fellow professor at Rutgers (where I have been an adjunct for nearly three years). Ross Baker noted that “It has always taken calamities of almost Biblical proportions to shake this country out of its smugness and complacency.” While I agree with his assessment, the use of the phrase “biblical proportions” demonstrated once again that my chosen field of specialization has a solid place in the popular imagination. Generally “biblical proportions” is a phrase used to refer to disasters, something along the magnitude of a world-wide flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, or the plagues of Egypt. These mythological episodes have left a deep impression on our culture that the message of the Bible is a fitting one for the first decade of the twenty-first century.

Perhaps we are really in trouble if this facile view of the Bible is wedded to a facile misuse of the same book for constructing prejudicial public policies and ill-conceived conservative “reforms.” If the past decade has been a wash in this country, I would attribute it to a conservative evangelical political machine that churned out a president who literally would have been pleased to bring on the mythical Armageddon. During this bushesque reign of biblical proportions, I lost a secure job teaching Bible and haven’t been able to find any other full-time work. I would continue my rant but I have to polish up my résumé, and hone my succinctness skills, and try for a Ghost Twitterer position.

The Heap Presents: Review of the Motorola Droid

“In a World of Doesn’t, Droid Does,” was the Verizon Wireless advertising moniker for perhaps one of the most awaited smartphones since the revolutionary iPhone. In fact, little was known about the phone, only quick glimpses due to a seemingly secretive yet intriguing marketing ploy used by VZW. The brief TV spots had to have been influenced by the similar secretive approach used by the promoters of the film Cloverfield. Here’s a sample TV commercial clip:

And of course the infamous iDon’t commercial:

Nevertheless, the real question after all of the advertising hype and hoopla still remains: Can the Droid be the first successful “iPhone killer?” Or at the very least, begin the end for Apple’s reign at the top of the smartphone market.

One of the most glorified selling points of the iPhone is the simplicity of its OS. Everything is only a few slides of the finger and a press of the finger away. While I never did have an iPhone, I did have an iPod touch. The interface was extremely navigable immediately. There wasn’t much to learn when t came to general functions or where something may be hidden. Everything had an icon, and you just scrolled to where the icon was located. The most recent update to the iPhone OS even allowed you to group apps on different “pages” of the sliding menu.

Droid’s interface is generally simple, though a first time user does have to learn the functions of certain buttons as well as the extensive settings menu.  Also, the initial clutter that is all of the application icons is a bit daunting as well initially. But the burgeoning Android user will know how convenient it is to have icons to ALL installed apps listed alphabetically in a slide out menu. This allows the user two place all sorts of widgets and the icons of the most used apps on one of 3 main screens.

Motorola Droid

I have yet to become too “app” savvy, and am in need of tips for useful apps! I do use two widgets, The Weather Channel and CNN widgets. TWC widget is a quick and convenient way to immediately check weather and temperature, with forecasts only a click away. CNN seems to be a good news widget, bt to be honest, I don’t look at it too much. I have heard that USA today might be the way to go with regards to a news ticker. I might have to give it a shot.

Don’t forget the “Social” apps! Dont worry. Facebook for Android already comes pre-loaded. So you can check that one off of your list. If you are into Twitter, I recommend Twidroid Free edition. The app allows you to update Twitter, while receiving tweets for those you follow instantly. AIM and Myspace apps are also available.

Droid requires you to have a Gmail account. Thus, your account’s email is synced to the device! It is possible to sync more than one gmail account (like my personal one and the account for The Heap!) and email addresses from other domains. In addition to email, your user name serves as your GChat name as well! Your buddies can chat with you on your phone as well!

The main free sports app for the Android OS is SportsTap. The app itself is very good, as scores from sports around the world, as well as surprisingly detailed box scores/ stats are readily available. The widget was disappointing because it didn’t seem to work most of the time. The favorite teams customization is pretty useful, as you are alerted when your team is playing and of changes in score. (Another Overtime loss for the Lightning tonight, by the way)

Then, like iPhone, there are an endless amount of created apps for just about anything! Some fun ones are the Coin Flip and Magic 8 Ball apps, that use the phone’s accelerometer to roughly simulate the physics of an actual coin flip or the shaking of the 8 ball. Google Sky Map is by far one of my favorites, as it uses the phone’s position and orientation to accurately tell you what constellations celestial bodies are visible by the user! It is absolutely amazing! And lastly, I have some other practical apps, like Flixster movies for times/reviews, Kayak for travel plans and Phoneflicks for organizing my Netflix queue.

As we can see, this has gone for far too long! I’ve decided to cut the review into parts. Part 2 will be about Music Apps, music playback and other media/ entertainment apps/ capabilities! Part 3 will most likely be about functionality, messaging, what I like and don’t like, and what makes Droid a serious contender in the smart phone battle! I might even make my own review video, showing off my Droid and showing you heapsters how it works! Stay tuned!

Tweetstats (Stats on you and others)

Have you ever wondered what your tweeting statistics are? Well, wonder no more this site, tweetstats (great name) will give you just that. From your average number of daily tweets to even your preferred method of tweeting… and all you have to do is just enter your user name!

How many tweets do you average daily? I’m a 5.9 a day twitterer!

Another great thing is that you can see your tweet cloud,Its a click option and see what words you use most frequently in your tweets. If you don’t like the Native text then it can load it up in wordle.net, you can click over to wordle, it’ll transfer your words and you can make it look like the one above!

(Twooshes ) In tweet cloud tab, it also lets you know how many twooshes you had. (Yeah, a twoosh.. I would never have known this word until I visdited this site!) A twoosh is a 140-character tweet and I’ve had 38 of them. Interesting.

Share your stats with us all in the comments below!

Twitter Hashtags: The Missing Manual

The hashtag system on Twitter, created by it’s users for a powerful way of categorizing massive amounts of information, is possibly the most misunderstood and misused tool in the entire Twitterverse. Hashtags, for those who aren’t aware, are words or phrases preceded by a pound symbol (#). For example, the ever-popular hashtag #iamageek has allowed geeks everywhere to collaborate and share their geekdom.
The major thing that most Twitter users don’t know is how to properly apply these hashtags. One might think that if their talking about a movie, they should put a hashtag before it’s name to categorize that tweet for that movie. This is a misuse of the system, however, because one could just as easily find tweets about that movie by searching Twitter for the name of the movie without that hashtag. No, hashtags are intended to be used to apply a tweet to a motif that is present in tweets that may not share the same exact subject matter.
An example of a misuse of a Twitter hashtag would look something like this:

Just finished reading a really great #book by #danbrown.

Whereas an example of a properly used hashtag would look something like this:

Sending out Wave invites to followers, DM me if you’d like one! #googlewave

What the latter tweet has done correctly is to categorize the main concept of the tweet in a way that allows other tweeters to find it easily. They have also put the hashtag outside of the tweet, which is not necessary, but can help the English of the tweet flow better while still accomplishing it’s purpose.

The last important thing about hashtags is that one must remember to stay to the predefined hashtag for a certain category. Often there are widely used hashtags for different things (like #iamageek) that several people use every day. If you use a hashtag like #iamsuchageek, not many people will find that tweet in a search because they have no reason to search that tag. By using #iamageek, you are integrating your tweet with all of the other tweets that have used that popular tag, and thus you are increasing the chances that many people will see that tweet.

Hopefully this guide has been helpful for understanding how to use Twitter hashtags correctly. If you are interested in Social Media, you know that having interesting and engaging content is only half the battle, and you have to find a way to advertise yourself. Hashtags are a great way to do that.

URBANA'09 Scribble (LiveBlog) may be FUN to watch!

According to Barney Lin (InterVarsity staffer from Chicago area) “This Scribble-Live helps cover all things Urbana09 in the social sphere. Air reactions to talks memorable sound-byte quotes (or paragraphs!), comments on seminars, questions & thoughts, share links & resources, post up pictures and help cover the largest student missions conference in North America!

The 20,000+ attendees physically at Urbana are just the tip of the iceberg. Around the world thousands of people are watching, praying, giving and engaging as general sessions are uploaded to Urbana09.org within hours after each session is over, and as they are now able (for the first time in Urbana history) to interact live with attendees thanks to the developments of social media.”

It’s a chance, for instance, for those of you (of whom there are many) who are not interested in creating a Twitter profile and who don’t want to get yourselves tangled up one more thing you feel like you have to maintain — BUT you would like to have a nearly front row view of this particular event: URBANA’09. This web-based blog is populated from a variety of social media sources — blogs, tweets, etc. It will be collected in on place for you eavesdropping pleasure. I think you’ll be encouraged! And amused at times. And moved to pray.

5 Ways to Grow Your Local Business with Social Media

Most small businesses do the bulk of their business locally. So, the thought of gaining access to Facebook’s 300 trillion users (may be more by now) isn’t that relevant or useful.

However, if those local businesses could use the some of the new powerful online tools and platforms to gain access to the 200-300 social media users in their town, now that might just make some sense.

Below are five things any local business can do to get more business using social media tools

1) Start a Local Group Online
2) Find and Network with Local Bloggers
3) Hold Meetups and Tweetups
4) Find local leads
5) Enhance Local Search Results

Strong night at the Saucer

Those of you following our Twitter feed, @beernerds, already saw what went down — really good stuff at the Flying Saucer tonight. They hosted their annual Beer Knurd party, and tapped a handful of rare, strong and quality beers — Avery Czar, Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout, North Coast Old Stock 2008……. and, of course the guest of honor, Saint Arnold Divine Reserve 9.

We’ll hopefully post full reviews for these beers soon. In the meantime, just know that it was a great night and a great lineup. Those of you following us on Twitter (@beernerds) already knew that….

:::Graffiti is being Blackballed:::

Earlier this week R’n'B singer Chris Brown was infuriated after a number of his fans informed him that major retailers in the U.S were blackballing his new album release Graffitti. This resulted in him deleting his twitter account under the pseudonym Mechanical Dummy.

You can’t deny his remarkable talent and from previewing a couple tracks off his new album it’s safe to say that it’s a very good listen. My favourite song is “Crawl” so far it’s a heartfelt ballad that seems to mirror his remorse. Obviously from the positive response from his first single “I Can Transform Ya” he understood from a PR perspective his music had to be the driving force behind his crawl back to the top and recapturing that lost chunk of his fan base.

What I can believe is that these stores didn’t give him a chance to redeem himself…let his music speak for him and consumers make up their own minds whether they want to support him based on his moral standing. When allegations aganist musicians like R.Kelly, Michael Jackson and various others have arisen there has always been a mixed reaction among the public. All I’m saying is that I will not be a happy bunny if I can’t walk into the store and buy CB’s album soon.

Carl's Jr. counts on Kim Kardashian, coupons to boost social standing

Dianna Dilworth
December 18, 2009

Carl’s Jr. has employed reality TV star Kim Kardashian to push its new line of salads through social media channels.

The idea behind the social media campaign is to acquire new customers by capitalizing on Kardashian’s celebrity and reaching out to her followers across the Internet. Kardashian has more than 2.6 million followers on Twitter and more than 500,000 friends on Facebook.

“Kim is an absolute Internet sensation, and she has vast audience that is already following her online. Her site is heavily trafficked as well,” said Brad Rosenberg, digital marketing manager at CKE Restaurants. “Her fans are already in these social media environments online. By partnering with her, we hope to bring some of her fans into our environments on social media.”

The campaign was created by Los Angeles-based advertising agency Mendelsohn|Zien. The video ads will debut next week on the Carl’s Jr. Facebook page and YouTube channel, and on television across Carl’s Jr. markets starting Dec. 28, 2009. The tag line of the campaign is “Who says salads can’t be hot?” and ties the sex symbol to the fast food restaurant’s first ever line of salads. Kardashian fans are asked to become Carl’s Jr. fans through coupons on their social media page.

“Salads are something that we have never featured before. It is a new introduction of this product for Carl’s Jr., and her fanbase is our target demographic of young, hungry guys and gals,” added Rosenberg. “Her celebrity will help us introduce this totally new product and bring her fans into the fold.”

The campaign also includes a live event on January 13. Kardashian will host “The Ultimate Salad Lunch Date,” broadcast live on Carl’s Jr.’s Facebook page. Kim will interact with fans during the lunch and chat via Webcam, while eating the Carl’s Jr. salad. Consumers who purchase any of the new salads between Wednesday, Dec. 30 and Tuesday, Jan. 12 will be given an access code to ask Kim questions during the lunch date. No code is required to watch the video event online.

There is also an augmented reality portion of the campaign. Kardashian will appear online in 3D, inviting guests to join her for the lunch. Following the invitation, Kim’s avatar can blow a kiss or do a twirl. The digital elements are being handled by 72andSunny, Carl’s Jr.’s digital agency of record.

Advent - FAIL

hello,

I have failed in the task i set myself for advent, it has now been 11 days since I have posted on my blog so i have Failed and I have now stopped in the Advent calender updates as I didn’t have that many ideas.

I am now going to bore you with the details of the last week and a half on one post

I was in a Pool competition as part of the colleges Christmas activities for the IT students, I was one of around 28 students that took part and I placed in the Top 8 as i made it to the Semi-Finals, I am happy with where I places as I did not think I would get paste the 1st round due to the fact that I have not played for around 18 months. I was knocked out by the guy that won overall so i don’t feel that bad but I think the reason I didn’t go on was that fact that all three of my games I played Back-to-Back and all of my opponents had had a brake in between gamee, all three games were close as there was only one ball in it on each so it is not that bad.

I am now on my Christmas holidays and the 1st day of them this happened:

gerrrr

gerrrr

I hate the snow, and then it turned into a snow storm.

On Friday I went out in the snow, I managed to get some pictures and I thought that I would share them to make up for the whole advent thing:

My Road

Mid Kent College in the snow

more snow

Ok so i have finished for today, as always please follow me on twitter.

Testing and improving ideas using Twitter

For those of you still trying to figure out why any business or business leader should jump on the Twitter bandwagon then take 5 minutes and listen to Jack and Suzy Welch’s BusinessWeek podcast on Why we tweet. In their words, Twitter starts conversations. Conversations that are more than just simple fun. Conversations that can help a company or leader test and improve their ideas.

Success in business depends on innovation. If these times, change is the only constant. For me, I talk things out. Twitter takes talking about change to another level. Instead of testing ideas by talking to one or two people, Twitter offers the potential to talk about your business to hundreds and thousands of clients.

Imagine floating changes to employee benefits, ideas around new products, improvements to existing processes or something as simple as what should be on the menu in the cafeteria. We all know that engaging employees and clients delivers results. In my mind, Twitter should be part of everyone’s engagement strategy, whether for personal or corporate use.

In the wise words of Jack Welch – “Just try it”.

To join me in conversation visit www.twitter.com/wotherspoond. To follow Algonquin College on Twitter find us at www.twitter.com/algonquincolleg.

For those of you still trying to figure this Twitter thing out watch this “How To” video. A great primer for those thinking of joining the conversation.

Podcast #003: Do I look more like Hannnibal or Murdock?

Recorded on December 3, 2009, this episode features Chris Lloyd, Gerard Gualberto, Chris Miles, Lou Franco, and myself, talking mostly about user interface technologies and tools.  Lots of tangents, of course, so everyone else is sure to be either very confused or amused upon listening.

Hey, leave a comment or question below, and maybe we’ll read/answer it “on the air”!

  • User interface chatter:
    • Chas talks a bit on background about the NetBeans Platform-based application he’s recently completed
    • The perils of using native-looking Swing look & feels, and the trap of having to make one’s application “look native”
    • Is Swing still slow?
    • Is Silverlight a potential deployment mechanism if you have a jvm-centric codebase, given the cross-compilation that ikvm makes available?
    • Javascript + canvas is pretty impressive these days.  The particle system demo referenced in the discussion is here.
    • We chatted about Cappuccino for a while, a javascript-based web framework that provides Cocoa-inspired UI components.  The examples look pretty slick, and there’s some in-production apps (280slides, Mockingbird) that really highlight what can be done.
    • Web development tooling sorta sucks, especially for non-techies (who are often the ones producing web content these days).
    • You’re probably using “thick-client” apps right now on OS X that are actually just wrappers around embedded web containers (webkit, really), and building such apps look to be a lot more pleasant than any other heavyweight UI framework that you might use to build “native” apps.
  • Dave Winer says twitter clients should be scriptable.  I don’t think any of us care enough to agree or disagree.
  • The 1% twitterati that think that twitter is so great because questions and such get answered so quickly (this is the Jeff Atwood Syndrome, perhaps), need to come back to earth.
  • Charter is monitoring Twitter in-real-time to find people bitching about service.  They are watching.
  • Companies, open source project maintainers, et al. better monitor Twitter and such
  • Ruby on Rails vs. JRuby on Rails — the key is: which do you know how to deploy and manage better (classic rails vs. just-another-java-war)?
  • Even after however-many-years, there’s still a lot of churn in how to “do Rails”, especially around deployment
  • I want to use the A-Team theme song as an intro to the podcast.  That’s not legit of course (barring a proper license for “redistribution”, feh).  But just for this episode, it’s OK, because we review the song on an artistic level. :-P
  • Somehow, we ended up going pretty deep into the rabbit hole of music copyright, fair use, licensing, distribution, cover bands, etc. etc. etc.
  • Miles got a cease-and-desist letter connected with his downloading a torrent. Seriously, what?!?

Enjoy!

When Astronomers Get Bored...

Since the start of #Meteorwatch I, along with many other have been clouded out. Leaving many that are organizers of this event with nothing to do!

That’s when “astronomers ” start to get a bit crazy. Not being able to take images of Meteors or play with someone elses images causes us to start #AWSURLATASS -ing, or Astronomers Who Stay Up Really Late And Talk About Stupid Stuff. Now the two AWSURLATASS Board Members, Mark Zuagg (@Zarquil) and Myself, Elias Jordan (@ksastro) decided to have a little fun of our own on twitter. While making a few people laugh….at our own expense.

This pictures should entirely speak for themselves, BUT if you need more of an explanation consult the links below the image collage.

My voiceover world from A-Z

Cappucino in Padova, Italy!

I put on my thinking cap recently, wondering what is my personal A-Z guideline to life as a professional Voice Artist.

One idea led to another, till I found I’d run the gamut from A-Z, or as they sometimes say in the States…from Soup to Nuts (appetiser to dessert!). Here’s my list! These were originally done as Tweets, hence their brevity.

A
Attitude is positive. Can’t win all auditions, but can get the ones that are mine & right for me!

B
Budget–a top priority– a meeting of what client can pay/what we require!

C
Counsel! Help is only an internet contact away. Develop a group of friends and help each other out!

D
Diligence. Do my best, every gig!

E
Expenses – Keep an eye on what “pay to play”/mktg efforts are worth paying for & when to give it a miss

F
Friends – Get to know many peeps in many different fields of life. Develop contacts.

G
