A resposta pra isso você encontra no site When Twitter is Down.

How to Express "Happy Anniversary" with 21st Century Tools

Anniversary cards are soooo 20th Century! They’re also impersonal, predictable and the embossed, flowery cards can cost as much as $7-bucks a pop!

This last anniversary (our 15th on July 29th), I wanted to do something special and very different from what I’ve done in the previous 14 years.

So I turned my back on a fourteen year tradition of spending about 20 minutes on the day of my anniversary, scouring through dozens of anniversary cards on the rack to find that “special one.”  It’s a challenge to find a greeting card that resides comfortably between cheesy and tacky, sappy and schmaltzy, and devoid of the annoying glitter and butterflies on the cover.  (I admit that the ultimate decision was made after looking at the backside of the card).

For our 15th anniversary, I decided to write a private blog post to my wife (yes, you can go ahead and view it: 15 Highlights in 15 Years with My Bride).

One of the challenges I faced with the blog post was how to help her find it.

In the previous 14 years, I would place the sealed card in a prominent place for her to see it throughout the day (usually next to a vase of flowers), that built up the anticipation for its unveiling until sometime after dinner.  But with a blog post (a private one), how in the heck would she find it?

Just posting it seemed a little impersonal.  Emailing it seemed a little corny.

Then I had a spectacular idea.  I would place a Facebook ad and link it to the blog.

I created a Facebook ad with our wedding picture, geo-targeted the heck out of it (by age, gender, marital status and hometown so she was one of 40 potential married women in our area to have the ad pop up), and then referenced her name in the ad so there was no mistake she would see it.  This idea was unfolding perfectly.

So, what happened? Did she log on to Facebook and see the ad?  What did she think when she clicked on the ad and came to her own special blog post?  Did she cry tears of joy that she had married such a romantic and technologically-savvy guy?

Well, my gameplan didn’t turn out the way I had envisioned it.  Yes, the message got posted on MarriageJunkie.com.  Yes,  Facebook accepted the ad.  And yes, the ad was linked to the blog.

What foiled my sure-fire, belt-it-out-of-the-park, romantic-idea-of-the-century?  The flippin’ weather.

July 29, 2009 was the HOTTEST DAY EVER RECORDED IN SEATTLE.  Seattle hit 103-degrees and our hometown hit 112-degrees.  For some people around the country, triple digit temperatures are not a big deal (but they’re usually set up with ample amounts of air conditioning).  In Seattle, air conditioning, especially in homes is more of a luxury.  Because A/C is only needed a handful of times per year, having it installed is fairly uncommon.

So, while my wife was on Facebook quite a bit on our anniversary, she accessed her Facebook on her phone while we attempted to stay cool at the mall, the theater, and the various restaurants (all with air conditioning).

The few moments that day that we were home, I logged onto her Facebook on her computer and kept refreshing the screen to make the ad appear.  It never did.

Viewing my Facebook Ad Manager, the ad was making an appearance for some of the women of Maple Valley, but not my woman of Maple Valley.  (Thankfully, no one clicked on the ad, so I wasn’t charged).

I hoped, I prayed, I did everything in my power to manipulate the ads on her Facebook Profile.

I waited as long as I could for “fate” to occur.  With the inside house temp registering a blistering 97-degrees at 11:30 pm, I submitted to the fact that my plan would fail to materialize.

I pulled my wife aside, logged onto my Facebook Ads Manager and showed her the ad she should have stumbled across, and then took her to the blog and showed her “her special page”.

She loved it and appreciated my efforts to do something special for her. I was pretty frustrated that my hard work had been thwarted by Mother Nature, but our 15th anniversary, nonetheless, was one we will never forget!

So with all the possibilities out there, what can you do to take an online tool or website and make your next “anniversary card” something especially meaningful?

Here’s some ideas, but I want to hear from you too!

Flickr: Create a collection of pictures of the two of you and your journey together.

YouTube: Make a special video message expressing your love to your mate.

Twitter: Send your spouse a direct message with a link to a blog page or web site with a special anniversary message.

Facebook: Create a Group/Fan page, make it private membership, and invite your spouse as the only invitee. Deck it out with photos, messages, and postings that scream out your adoration for your spouse.

WordPress: Make your own private blog devoted to your marriage — kind of your own digital scrapbook of memories, poems, photos and more!

Share your own ideas of how to express “Happy Anniversary” with 21st century tools by leaving a comment.

WOW Google / Bing Push Your Tweets Into Real Time Search Results

Google and Microsoft have made deals with Twitter. Microsoft has also made a deal with Facebook to include Twitter and Facebook updates into Bing search results.Google will be adding tweets to search results as well. There are also rumours that Google will make a similar deal with Facebook.

This makes it crucial and important for you and your business to consider a massive action in these booth networks to be found in ‘real time’ search results from Facebook and Twitter.

Let’s think a little bit about this news…

There are further important social networks, like MySpace or LinkedIn (with about 50 million businesses included), out there which also could be a target of such a deal.

The big players like Google and Bing start with the other big players in social networking and than they maybe go deeper to include the smaller networks also.

Can you imagine the power of this opportunity for you and your business?

In which or in how many of these networks are you active actually?

  1. Twitter
  2. Facebook
  3. MySpace

Stinky Teddy: l’orsetto puzzone del real time web

We use the gossip and chatter from the real-time web (Twitter, Social Media, Blogs) to determine the up-to-the-minute meaning of your search. Our search results reflect this zeitgeist.

Black Stone Cherry - Glasgow Barrowlands - 17/10/09

The first show to sell out on Black Stone Cherry’s autumn tour was at the Glasgow Barrowlands, and I just happened to be there.

Openers The Parlor Mob, were… pretty average, they didn’t really do anything special and the crowd just didn’t seem into it.

Next up were Duff McKagan’s Loaded, and this set was very special to me. you see, the night before the show, i tweeted to Duff asking him to play new rose (The song by legendary punk band The Damned, also performed by Guns N’ Roses with Duff on Vocals) and before the gig my dad and I started speaking to the Loaded bassist ( really nice guy BTW) and turns out, Duff got my tweet and it was added to the setlist, needless to say i was over the moon, what made it even better was the absolutely fasntastic set that Loaded played, featuring songs such as Flatline, Dark Days, Sick and covers of Attitude by The Misfits, It’s So Easy by Gn’R (not to mention New Rose).

Then, the headliners took to the stage, straight into opener Rain Wizard, which sounded even better than on the album. Then during second song Backwoods Gold, the lights went out, as guitarist Ben Wells said, because “they were rocking so hard!” So the band played in the dark for the rest of their set, it really added to the atmosphere. Chris Robertson, Lead vocalist and guitarist looked overwhelmed with awe and gratitude as the fans basically sung every word of the set, the highlight was Peace Is Free, where he didn’t really have to sing at all. Their superb set included songs from their self titled debut album, Folklore & Superstition and even tracks from the re-release of  that album, plus they even threw in little snippets of Sweet Home Alabama, by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Voodoo Child by Jimi Hendrix. Black Stone Cherry are an unbelievable band and deserve every bit of praise they have ever got.

£15 a ticket for two awesome bands and one… not just as awesome, is fantastic value. This is the kind of thing that stay with you all your life, I know i wont ever forget it.

Credit By : http://www.ipattt.com วิธีสมัคร twitter 1.

3.User Name twitter

( already been taken )

twitter แนะนำคนให้ follow ถ้าไม่ต้องการคลิก skip this step ตัวเล็กๆล่างสุด ผู้ใช้ twitter รายอื่นที่ twitter แนะนำให้ ถ้าต้องการ follow ทั้งหมดจะติ๊ก select all ก็ได้ วิธีใช้ twitter หมายเหตุ การ sign in twitter

Thaksinlive

Twitters for Gleeks.

Yarrrrrbearing

Bremkr > did you destroy my ship just for fun?
Jgxrut > no, i did it for the loot and the salvage
Bremkr > then why did you pk me after?
Jgxrut > that was for fun

I have been lurking lately in a pocket lowsec system, which so far has been absolutely fantastic for me. I can PvP, hunting pirates and unwary missioners. I can also PvE, The system has been just perfect for me, as I can simultaneously PVP and PVE – there is a level 4 agent in the system that I can use when there is no one in system to shoot. I also use the agent to bait and kill mission-probing pirates; At one such encounter, I sat at the warp in point of an accel gate in my Dominix of Death, Doom, and Poddings (well, not poddings; it locks too slowly) and deployed T1 drones to make the pirate think I was a noobie. The following convo happened afterwards; where I used directional-fu to awe the pirate (he was new at it):

00sage00 > o/
00sage00 > queen your alt?
insane betty > yes
00sage00 > lol
00sage00 > saw you trying to probe me
00sage00 > you’re using the anathema named “judo” right? (the Anathema was cloaked at a deep safe, but I had seen it on directional about two hours earlier when it was undocking from a station)
insane betty > u got it
00sage00 >
insane betty > im busted
00sage00 > you need to lose some sec status
insane betty >    i lost some today
00sage00 > saw that
00sage00 > to the guy in a tristan?
insane betty > yep
insane betty > how u find all this out?
00sage00 > 1337 skillz

Trimarked Punisher > Trimarked Rifter

Midway through the week, Spectre and I had a disagreement concerning whether a trimarked Rifter was better than a trimarked Punisher. So we agreed to a 1v1 date.

Spectre3353 > look
Spectre3353 > you go setup a punisher with a buffer like this
Spectre3353 > and i will win a 1v1
Spectre3353 > lets do it
Spectre3353 > we’ll make it a date or something
00sage00 > alright
00sage00 > where at?

Unsure about whether my claim would hold due to Spectre having more skills than me and expensive implants, I began EFT warrioring. I compared both our fits, the Punisher (identical to that in my Punisher Guide, except with trimarks added) with my skills and the Rifter with all level 5 skills, slave implants, and gunnery hardwirings. According to EFT, 1) the Rifter would have twice the DPS that I had, 2) overheated, my rep could help equalize the difference, and 3) my EHP was larger, even without slaves. Although reassured a bit by the stats, I made a slight change to my fit, adding a tracking disruptor with a range script in place of a web, in case Spectre attempted to fight at range.

The next day, I traveled to Spectre’s lowsec abode in “Just A Flesh Wound“, my brand new Punisher. Because I had a tracking disruptor, Spectre fit one as well. My tracking disruptor proved its worth in the first match, as Spectre stayed at range and shot Barrage ammo at me. Thankfully, my rep was easily able to keep up with the reduced damage. The first match ended with a draw, as neither of us could kill each other. So we had a rematch with webs instead of tracking disruptors. This time Spectre popped. Although he was using the wrong ammo for half the fight, I was able to tank his DPS even after the ammo change; at the end of the battle, I was at 93% armor, with around 30% heat damage to my repper and 15% heat damage on my guns. Spectre says I cheated, but he’s just jealous:

Outro assunto

Ficamos assim. Amanhã tem mais. Tchau!

Connecting with alumni on Twitter

This Tuesday was my last (scheduled) shift at KBIA. But I’ll be heading back tomorrow to finish up.

My story is on alumni organizations at local universities (Mizzou, Columbia College and Truman State University) are using Twitter. I pitched this because the Twitter crowd is surprisingly older than I expected (median age being 31!) and everyone, m friends, small businesses, organizations, etc. all are tweeting. I think it’s an exciting new tool and I hope listeners are interesting in learning about how it is being used.

I spent some time researching Twitter data online and searching within Twitter for local alumni organizations. Almost all universities are using Twitter in one way or another. The most common for news and sports. I focused on alumni because it wasn’t reaching to what I expected to be the Twitter crowd– my friends.

I interviewed three sources and transcribed. I think I’m ready to write a script and possibly go back to one more source! Hopefully I’ll be done this week.

Hey, Jones Soda! I Want Cola Flavor Soda! Send Me Crate Of It!

Legend has it that when Coca Cola first came out a century back, it contained a substance (Cocaine) which made it highly addictive!  While the addiction part may not be entirely substantiated, I have met a fair number of people who ‘can’t live’ without a Coke (or Pepsi).

Having grown up in the South, I have had a few “Co’ Cola’s”, as we call them, and while I love their taste, they simply can’t compare to the “new” flavors that have emerged recently of soda with Cane Sugar instead of Corn Syrup.  Pepsi has tried it, Coke makes a version in Mexico of this, however, my all time favorite is Jones Soda.

There are several dozen flavors (check out some of the uber-bright ones in the picture), but the purest and most addictive of  them all is their Cola flavor.

Aha! Therein lies the rub (or whatever Shakespearean quote that I meant to say).

It turns out that while stores stock plenty of Fufu Berry and Green Apple, finding Cola flavor is a veritable search for the Holy Grail.

I have contacted the company, hoping that they could point me towards a store in my area that carries it.  What I got in reply was a canned answer that directed me to, “check with my local store for all my favorite Jones soda flavors”.

Um….they don’t carry my favorite flavor.  That’s why I am contacting you!

So, I have tried again. I have contacted Jones on their website and via Twitter @jonessodaco, hopefully someone in their system can figure out where they stock it and send me a crate or two.

I’m off to try their Facebook site, wish me luck, and thanks for reading!

Don't Leave it Too Late - How Social Networking can Kick-Start your Writing

This morning, we woke up to the news that Boyzone’s Stephen Gately had died suddenly, at the age of 33.

When young people die, it is always shocking but particularly so when it is unexpected.  It is not so much the reminder that we are mortal or that life is short – we all know that don’t we? – but the realization that this was not in their immediate plan.  Like Michael Jackson earlier in the year, Stephen was on the verge of a world tour.  Dying wasn’t on his agenda just like it isn’t on mine.  It’s the thought that I could pop out for milk and never drink that cup of tea on the worktop that I find particularly chilling.

Poignantly, Stephen’s last Twitter update read:

“still busy – lots going on. Focussing (sic) on finishing my book next so may be quiet here.”

I have no doubt that his book will be finished and on the shelves in time for Christmas but as for the rest of us, how many of us will shuffle off never having said or written the things we wanted to?

For many people, writing is something we can put off until we’re older; a bit like finding God, we’ll do it when we’ve got a bit more time on our hands!  I’m no different – although I write for a living, like many people, I still find it difficult to find time to write for myself.

When I need motivation, however, I don’t need to look any further than my two teenage diaries which documented a few months each of 1984 and 1987.  Although they were brief, I still managed to chart such events as Marvin Gaye’s murder, the sinking of the Herald of Free Enterprise and my flirtation with a loveable rogue called Jason!  These diaries remind me that by keeping a diary now then when (or if!) I’m older, I will be able to recall my children’s early lives in similarly vivid detail and not have to rely on a jumble of vague memories.

The challenge for many of us is finding time to write, on top of working, raising our families and doing our best to fend off the grim reaper!  The answer is, I believe, to start small.  And the fact is that anyone who posts the occasional update to an online networking service or forum has already done so.

So if you struggle to find the time to write every day but do manage to get onto Facebook or Twitter, why not turn your online updates into a diary?  As you get into the habit of keeping your diary up-to-date, you will probably start to add clarifying details and, before you know it, updating your diary will have become a part of your daily routine.

Most Companies not aware of Groundswell

Are most American businesses using Twitter and the new social media to add vitality to their focus and mission? No. Most are definitely not.

Almost unanimously, when asked if their company needed a “micro-blogging platform that connected them in real time to thousands of users around the planet” they answered, well– “Not really.” Of course, had Ma Bell taken a poll before launching the telephone, the answer would probably have been the same.

Forrester, the research consultancy that wrote the book on the ‘groundswell‘, has released the results of a new research report. The study shows that real-time collaboration has stalled in the business community due in most part to the lack of adoption in technologies such as web conferencing and instant messaging. That may be true with existing technologies but it is important to note the new generation of applications that extend real-time collaboration tools.

The State Of Workforce Technology Adoption by Forrester is definitely comprehensive in its examination of how people use technology in the workforce. It’s a mass-market report, meaning this is how people use technology today. They surveyed 2,001 “information workers” at organizations with 100 or more employees. It is Forrester’s first report in this realm. It covers devices, productivity, mobility, collaboration, and intranet portals

Forrester analyst Ted Schadler wrote the report. He makes the point that the purpose of the study is to walk a mile in the shoes of the information worker.

These are information workers who:

  • Predominantly use desktop computers: 76%
  • Have a pent up demand for smart phones: Just 11% use them at work
  • Rely on email for most everything
  • Do not really use traditional collaboration tools such as web conferencing and instant messaging

Just look at how dominating email has become and you see the challenges to real-time collaboration.

This niche opportunity should be encouraging to i-Media students who understand the power of the groundswell. To know that most companies don’t even have current access to the latest social media tools opens up all kinds of job opportunities for the savvy new media specialist.

The Irish Recruiters Conference, part 2

Up until this year, a typical conversation between two recruitment consultants might have gone something like this:

Recruiter 1: “So how’s business?”
Recruiter 2: “Brilliant, just had my best month ever, how about you?”
Recruiter 1: “Fantastic, just closed the biggest deal of my career and I’m now thinking about setting up on my own”
Recruiter 2: “Really? Good for you, there’s plenty of money to be made”

Chances are, Recruiter 2 was on a final warning for poor sales performance and Recruiter 1 had just been sacked!
2009 has without a doubt been the toughest year for recruiters on record yet consultants still have a habit of BS’ing each other about how well they are doing. It used to be a case of whoever blinks first is weakest; therefore eavesdropping on a room full of recruitment agents just re-affirmed most people’s impressions that recruiters are full of hot air. So when Declan Fitzgerald, a global sourcing manager with Microsoft and founder of the Irish Recruiters Group on Linked In organised the first Irish Recruiters Conference 6 months ago, many skeptical recruiters would have been forgiven for expecting more hot air and BS. Thankfully, this wasn’t to be. The first Recruiter Conference brought together a real mix of industry professionals who were all suffering, whether they were in-house recruiters worried about keeping their jobs, agency recruiters who were struggling to make placements or service providers who had discovered an industry unwilling to part with its dwindling supply of cash. An overwhelming majority of attendees were open and frank about the problems they were having and were there because they needed help. I believe that most people walked away feeling more positive about the future having spoken with peers who were in the same boat and having seen and heard a number of speakers demonstrate what they felt the future held for the industry.

Yesterday afternoon, in the Westbury Hotel in Dublin, scores of recruiters descended upon the second Irish Recruiters Conference to hear what a panel of industry experts had to say and to share ideas once again on where the future lay. Presenting on the day were Declan Fitzgerald, host and founder of the event, himself a tech-evangelist; Bill Fischer, a jobs-board pioneer who recently founded TwitterJobSearch, Martin Cerullo from Alexander Mann Solutions, arguably the leading BPO player in the recruitment industry globally; Fergal O’Byrne, a well respected internet entrepreneur who recently joined innovative Irish owned video recruitment provider, Sonru and two senior sales guys from EMC (I have to apologise as I didn’t write down their names and they weren’t confirmed on the original event literature).

So, after my long worded intro, here is a summary of what I felt were the most relevant discussion points, topics and learnings from the day:

Declan opened the conference with a further exploration on the current and future technology trends that he believes we, as recruiters, should be aware of:
He discussed QR codes and their growing use as a marketing tool. Quick Response codes are like barcodes that you can show at the bottom of your advertisement or product allowing consumers who have a QR Reader to scan the code and view content from the advertiser. There are numerous iPhone Apps that allow you to scan a QR with two clicks, directing you to on-line content that the advertiser feels is relevant to you.

So what can I use QR codes for within the recruitment industry? As a start, I decided that my next set of business cards should have a QR code allowing people to perhaps check out my Linked In profile in two easy clicks. Perhaps companies could incorporate QR codes in print media referencing their careers site or at conference stands to allow passers by to see what they are currently hiring for? The applications are endless but will it take off? I hope so but before today I had never heard of them despite the fact that they are already out there on milk cartons and in magazines.

Next up was Qik.com, which allows you to to turn your phone into a miniature broadcasting device. Essentially it broadcasts a live feed of your iPhone camera (or equivalent) to the web and records and stores the movie file on-line for you to share later. This seems like a really cool application as it would allow you to host video interviews on the fly and involve off-site people in real time. As nearly all our interviews are done on the phone with overseas candidates, this has enormous personal appeal to me.

Next we looked again at augmented reality and the likes of Wikitude on the Google Android and iPhone. To give you an example, an application called Layar alows you to hold your iPhone in the air and see your screen populated with Tweets that are being broadcast close by. From a recruitment point of view, perhaps we will see apps that allow you to “scan” people by pointing your camera phone at them and seeing their Linked In, Facebook and MySpace profiles pop up as digital icons on the live picture? Bill Fischer later joked that augmented reality is great for dating sites or stalkers!

I had to step out of the conference to take a call for a few minutes at this point, so I may have missed something! Please do share if I have!

Declan then discuss some geo-map tools such as Job Compass that allow you to search for jobs via a Map, showing flags for vacancies in each area that allow you to preview or see the full job spec. I am a big fan of geo-searching for jobs, particularly on a mobile device where it is trickier to fill in fields and use drop downs. The Select People geo-search is long overdue but I am re-energised to get it completed now.

Apparently there are now 250 job apps on Facebook, 11 from the UK but none yet from Ireland. Apparently worky are working on one but where is it?
www.apps.ie is a good sire for finding Irish apps for the iPhone
Declan recommends Twecipe!

Wrapping up his presentation, Declan looked again at his predictions for the future, re-iterating that the cloud CV will come to the fore (ex. www.visualcv.com).
I tend to agree; the days of drawing up a CV in word and emailing it to 10 different agencies are fast dying. Candidates will need to be savvier about how they maintain their on-line professional presence and promote this to internet recruiters worldwide.

Declan recommends (Robert Scoble) as a great person to follow on-line.

Talent Hubs & Crowd Sourcing: Paddytech is a great niche site set up by an Irish owned IT recruitment company who later migrated their user base to a Ning site. They discuss IT topics and post their jobs to a captive audience of IT professionals.

Nomee aggregator is a relatively new desktop aggregator that allows you to manage up to 100 social media sites from one location.
icloud is perhaps the world’s first Operating System in a browser. When will someone bring out a fully fledged Recruitment OS?

Wrapping up, Declan pointed out that Microsoft’s Employee Referral Program is still one of their key sources for new hires.
I looked through our own Select People placement stats for the last year and over half of the candidates that we have placed came from referrals! These were either candidates we headhunted who recommended someone else or people who came from our Facebook referral scheme.

Next up was William Fischer of Work Digital Ltd in the UK to talk about TwitterJobSearch.
All in all, Bill’s presentation was great; I really enjoyed his style which immediately endeared you to him. Half the time you were left wondering if he had done any preparation and the rest of the time you expected him to give up and walk out of the room. You didn’t fool us Bill, it was a well-practiced and pitch perfect performance, highly enjoyable!
Twitterjobsearch uses a sophisticated and ever-evolving algorithm to scrape Twitter and aggregate all posts that refer to jobs. The site also allows employers to post job specs on their site directly or by providing an RSS feed.
They also have a new iPhone app pending, should be available any day soon.
Apparently Objective C is the best programming language to use for the iPhone but there are very few developers around who have those skills.
Most people use webview applications, i.e. apps that are really just links to html code on the web.
Android has its own language but it is easier to figure it out for multi-language programmers. Nonetheless developers often encounter problems trying to code for the Android.
TJS’s algorithm doesn’t search for hash-tags such as #jobs because spammers are increasingly using hash-tags, negating their usefulness.
Bill’s recommendation on tweeting jobs is to include job title, location and a link to the job spec.
TJS store tweets forever but only show tweets that are 30 days old and younger.
Bill showed us the map view which shows jobs tweets posted all over the world, all of which are no more than 72 hours old.
Bill’s research shows that candidates looks at a max of 45 vacancies on a job board and then move on, no matter how many more relevant results there are.
With TJS, you can choose to pay to be at the top of the queue (managed accounts)
In response to a question from the audience, Bill pointed out that you can see anyone who has publicly applied for a job posted on the site, which allows you to search amongst people based on what they want to do next rather than what they have done in the past.

The next presenter was Martin Cerullo from Alexander Mann Solutions
Martin gave us an overview of AMS’s BPO offering and went through some examples of what they are doing for them.
An interesting offering that AMS have facilitates client brand consistency through having an in-house ad agency and allowing clients access to modify part of the ads on-line.
I know lots of my clients who appreciate this as I have had to design their ads and modify them before arranging for their publication, something that an ad agency would charge you a fortune for!
Martin highlighted the importance of mixing news feeds and job feeds on Twitter accounts to make them worth following.
He also spoke about Behavioural Targeting: which is essentially targeting the IP addresses of target clients/ companies when implementing your web advertising strategy.
Another fair point was the importance of branding your Twitter account, a basic but essential tip that we should all listen to.
Martin offered an example of a client of his who created a targeted LinkedIn Group to have a pool of people to search from. This is a great idea, one that we implemented last year with the launch of the Cayman Business Network on Linked In which is now the largest Cayman specific group on the site.
Continuing the discussion on marketing channels, Martin discussed the concept of clients having YouTube channels which are more to create noise and viral space rather than to directly source candidates. This illustration has inspired us to launch some video guides to the countries that we recruit in to.
Martin echoed Declan’s comments earlier about QR codes and noted their use in retail recruitment, at graduate fairs and at career stands etc.
AMS’s clients use ATS that aggregates sourcing tools such as Sourcepoint, Talentdrive etc
Martin demonstrated Standard Chartered Bank’s new career site that AMS designed that builds content based on user specific criteria.
On the candidates side, Martin highlighted Joboso, a UK site focused on candidates that allows you to upload your CV and push out to job boards.

All in all, a solid, professional presentation that gave this viewer a good insight into how smart multinational organisations are approaching their recruitment strategy.
Although Martin is a self-confessed advertising guy rather than a recruitment expert, his business expertise and insight is highly applicable.

Taking a break from presentations, we then broke into Groups of five to discuss the topic: “Job Boards Vs Social Networks: Where are you placing your bets and how will both evolve?” In my group, I had the pleasure of speaking with Noel from Google (in-house recruiter), Deirdre from totaljobs (job-board), Ruadrhi from MyNewCV (service provider to candidates) and Fergal from Sonru (service provider to employers/ agencies). It was an ideal mix of people, all coming from different backgrounds and perspectives.

Some of the issues and observations raised by the group included:
Monster have always been stubborn and complacent and have refused to change with the times re: layout etc.
The Job Boards need to innovate to make money, introducing services such as psychometric testing etc.
The time to change was probably 12 months ago but most are only changing now.
Within social networks you have more of a say in what you are doing, they are, by definition, “social” rather than static.
Job Boards need to become more interactive and engaging and need to look to best practices from the social media world.
A lot of the jobs boards don’t have good job specs, which makes it harder to entice the candidates; it is easier to match jobs with people on a social network, also the candidates feel as if they have been headhunted, which flatters them.
Social networks are for attracting passive candidates, there will always be a need for jobs boards to find active job seekers
When posting a job to a job-board, most employers describe the jobs in the same way whereas with social networks you can tailor your description for the specific audience that you are targeting.
google have teams focused on each separate social media source within emea, dont really use jobs boards
Large corporates can more easily afford to abandon the jobs boards as they have a well recognised brand that people will go to whereas smaller companies often need a marketplace where prospective hires can find them.
Candidates find it frustrating and often a waste of their time dealing with agencies on boards as they rarely hear back from them. Social media forces an employer to interact and engage with applicants, often in a very public forum. This self-correcting aspect of social media forces recruiters to be better at getting back to people.
Is the future in specialist niche boards and are super boards dead? Perhaps in the long run employers will return to the super boards (Monster, Irishjobs etc) if the market returns to buoyancy and there is a shortage of candidates.
Should job sites have a client response index or allow users to rate the agency or employer by satisfaction, similar to ebay?
All agreed that there will always be a place for job-boards but that they need to evolve to stay alive.

Our penultimate presenter was Fergal O’Byrne from Sonru, who I had just had the pleasure of speaking with as a member of the break-out group that I was part of.
Fergal is a newcomer to the recruitment industry and entertained us with his insights as he took us through his crash course journey in recruitment over the last few months, since joining the company which was set up by Ed Hendrick, a good friend of Select People, early this year.
Sonru is a great business idea that has global appeal. In fact, for an overseas recruiter such as Select People, it’s ideal. Essentially it allows hiring managers and recruiters to send an interview request to a candidate and then review their interview on-line, at a time convenient to them. A friend of mine has developed a similar voice solution for the education/ learning sector (www.learnosity.com) that has taken that sector by storm. I hope to see similar success for Fergal and Ed.
As a side note, Ed spoke about job-a-matic, a web-site that allows you to create free job boards, worth looking into.
He said that he believes that people are reducing their social network channels and personally just uses Facebook and Linked In.

The final presentation was from EMC, an impressive company globally and major employer in the Cork area.
Unfortunately this presentation really did not deliver for me and I felt it was a real waste of time for the many attendees who had spent good money to be at this conference. No offence to the guys presenting, they were enthusiastic and detailed, it’s just that I feel the audience all know what an ATS is and have tried and are probably using a variety of applications similar to Salesforce.com. I felt like I was being presented to as a potential Salesforce.com customer who has never seen an ATS before, rather than a professional in the recruitment industry who is there to share ideas and hear about important innovations.
The question and answer session was the most productive part of this session and there seemed to be plenty of enthusiasm from the audience, so maybe I am in the minority. I’d welcome thoughts from other participants on this.

Following a short Q&A session with the panel, we concluded the event.
All in all, I felt that it was a productive half day that inspired me with plenty of new ideas, one of which was to finally start this blog.
I look forward to the next event and will excuse what I felt was a mis-step on the selection of one of the presenters.
Thank you to Declan for putting it together, all of the presenters for giving of their time and also to my fellow “break-out” group members, Noel, Deirdre, Ruadhri and Fergal.

William Bonner, Milena e o Twitter

Milena Fagundes

The ROI that would be king

ElaineGantzWright’s blog is for people interested in using the Web and online marketing to drive social change. Elaine covers social media for nonprofits, philanthropy trends, online giving, cause marketing, random life musings, and more.
The pursuit of social media ROI (return on investment) continues to vex me. Last week, my blog post featured some comments about its confounding elusiveness and sparked lively discussion—on and offline. It’s still a very hot topic—at conferences, webinars, cocktail parties, bunko nights, and marketing strategy meetings going on as I type.

Once again, I turn to one of my master media mentors—Clay Shirky. He says:

“A revolution does not happen when a society adopts new tools. It happens when a society adopts new behaviors.”

And I think that quote sums up the core conundrum. At the end of the day, social media is really not “a program” at all. It is a fundamental shift in the way customers, donors, constituents, and employees consume and produce information. It’s behavior—a change in the way we are in the world.

Therefore, the future of marketing is not about telling people things—but about doing things with and for people. Think about it. How do you calculate ROI on messaging coming from your target audience? How do you calculate ROI (an old media metric) in a new media environment? It’s a brave new world, indeed—where we are “creating an environment for coordination and collaboration.”

Even if you consider the question in old media terms, isn’t it like trying to figure ROI on your phone, your conference room, or your fax? Few of us really think about these things in relationship to ROI. But since it’s the Internet, there is still a certain geek mystique. We are a little squeamish and feel the need to “ROI everything”—even if it means constructing elaborate parallel expense models based on paid Google adwords or other media buys. But the truth is, social media will soon be the rule—not the exception. Cost of doing business. David Spark addresses some of these issues from a refreshing perspective on socialmedia.biz. The requirement that everything fit in a discrete ROI queue is simply unrealistic and soon, anachronistic.

Perhaps, a 21st century take on this question would be Return on Engagement—taking the focus away from the justification of hard costs and considering opportunity costs. What do we sacrifice if we are not involved? What are the benefits—tangible and intangible—of spending your time monitoring and creating conversation? What business or donor involvement have you created?
Rules of Engagement

Still, even in the ROE context, just having a blog, Facebook account, or Twitter profile does not a social media strategy make. The fabric of social media success is woven from many threads and yarns, including compelling content, irresistible contests/quizzes, provocative video/photos, and authentic voices. You wouldn’t use just one traditional channel to market your product or organization, so it is probably not useful to think that one Twitter account or a blog post by itself can somehow produce ROI—or even ROE—overnight. Attributing a direct revenue equation to an isolated social media marketing activity simply isn’t relevant or accurate. Though weak individually, coordinated social media activities can certainly move the needle.

Engagement fosters affinity, trust, commitment—and ultimately, investment. Marketing has become equal parts science and art. Remember, creating a blog on WordPress of Blogger is free. Right now, Facebook and Twitter are free. So, social media’s costs are mostly labor, time, and creative energy. Therefore, social media success really comes down to commitment, clarity about your objectives, and getting over your fear of exposure—a horse that has already left the barn, I might add. Also, it helps if you have something to say that will interest your audience. Whether you call it—ROI, ROE, or RBI (wait, that’s baseball), here are some thoughts on how to plan, launch, and execute an effective social media plan:

• Focus on conversation, content, and benefits—not tools and technology
• Highlight intangibles
• Justify qualitative, as well as quantitative objectives.
• Compare costs of alternatives, benefits, and of not doing anything.
• Use pilot projects to test and evaluate
• Streamline data collection
• Get buy-in by using a cross-functional team or committee
• Release your fear

The pre-social media business universe was built on linear measurement. I think it’s time to consider using a different kind of yardstick—something with multiple dimensions and constant movement, something we have yet to invent. If small is the new big and free is the new economic engine, what are the new metrics? Is it time to get comfortable with a whole new level of ambiguity. What do you think?

Lessons Brands Can Learn From The Prez On Social Media

There is a very good post on Social Media Today http://www.socialmediatoday.com/SMC/129423 on The Obama Administration dropping the ball on Social Media after what was an excellent start during the campaign. The central point being once you start you have to be consistent if you want to retain, engage and grow your audience, fans and advocates. Getting a consumer to trial is expensive, keeping them through a real and continuous dialogue takes effort but is a lot less expensive in the long run than trying to replace those lost to weak engagement.

If you are going to take advantage of the power of social media, understand it requires dedication.

Learn to Make Snappy Headlines for Twitter

http://www.copyblogger.com/twitter-headlines/

The above link is to an article on a fast growing area of internet copywriting – the world of Twitter. The article covers the difference between writing twitter headlines, and headlines for other forms of online copywriting. Using Twitter limits a headline to 140 words or less, and the fact that you need people to ‘Re-Tweet’ a headline for it to spread means they have even more limited space. This article suggests keeping your Twitter headlines short and to the point for it to work in this social networking form. Another interesting area outlines how you should reward the reader.

Shawn Andrews tweeting up a storm

It’s a slow week in Eaglesland with the bye and all. So, what else is there to do other than check in on Shawn Andrews via Twitter. Seems like the Big Kid is living life in Los Angeles where he’s supposed to be rehabbing his “injured” back.

In the last few days, he’s dropped a new beat to the tune of “Oh Christmas Tree,” complained about the cops and their driving habits, and dealt with the gassy asses of a few women. Enjoy.

Shawn Andrews has been tweeting about women farting.

Policeman texting and driving hmm. Can u write a citizens ticket for that.. Nah I’ll leave well enough alone

TwitStalk: The Latest Twitter Application

The definition of stalking is as follows from dictionary.com. “The act or course of stalking quarry, prey or the like”.

Now typically when a definition includes the word it is attempting to define in its definition I don’t like to use it but I made an exception in this case. Today my professor decided to give us a blog prompt that includes looking at a person on twitter that we are following and taking a look at who they follow to see how that reflects on who the original person we’re twittering (i hope I used that correctly) as a person. Confused? So was I until I made a very simple connection. This assignment, in its most basic form, is stalking. So Ive made a new twitter application: TwitStalk.

This is how it begins. I chose Eugine Eugine “Mirman to follow on Twitter. A short background on Eugine Mirman is that he plays a building manager in the show “Flight of the Concords” on HBO (Which by the way is FANTASTIC and I highly recommend you to see). Anyway, so I chose Eugine Mirman as my first TwitStalk victim.

To start I went to his home page and studied all the people he followed. Here are some of those people: Danny DeVito, SubPop Records, Comedy Exchange, Al Gore, Al Yankovic, Barrie Mirman, Ilya Mirman and so on. So what have I deduced from the 80 or so people that he follows? Well here’s an impression of who Eugene Mirman is thanks to the stalker techniques I picked up from TwitStalk.

Eugene Mirman is a guy who really loves his career so he follows a lot of stuff that correlates with that like the comedy exchange where he performs at a lot and SubPop Records that helps produces his comedy CD’s (to know this kind of information you must religiously follow a person’s tweets…this is quite easy for stalkers with TwitStalk). Also, Mirman is big on following people he finds to not only be entertaining but people he looks up to as well like Danny DeVito and Al Gore. Finally I was surprised to see how many people he was following were family members. Not only was he following them but he also was communicating with them and they seem really close. What I gathered through my stalking process was that Eugene Mirman is big on family, comedy and life. He loves what he does and you can tell that because he follows the things that make him the most happy in life. Comedians, friends and family.

So the next time you’re looking to learn all you can about a person you know nothing about or have never met and don’t want to be an actual creeper or actual stalker. Use TwitStalk. It gives you the same results as normal stalking except without the restraining orders, long nights, jail cells and dark clothing. A win win situation in my book.

Oh and for your enjoyment: This is Eugene Mirman. Enjoy!

Twitter to Launch Lists

Tweeter is working on to launch a new feature “Lists”. Official blog of the Twitter says that they are testing the new feature and once it’s done it will be out soon. The idea is to allow people to curate lists of Twitter accounts. For example, you could create a list of the funniest Twitter accounts of all time, athletes, local businesses, friends, or any compilation that makes sense.

Lists are public by default (but can be made private) and the lists you’ve created are linked from your profile. Other Twitter users can then subscribe to your lists. This means lists have the potential to be an important new discovery mechanism for great tweets and accounts.
